Quote with 12 notes

If the credits on the next album don’t include ‘Codling, keyboards, guitar (on and off)’ then we’ve missed a trick.

Suede - Indian Strings

“‘Indian Strings’ was one of the first songs written for Head Music: I think it’s a really good piece of songwriting and I think it could be sung by anybody, really. You could imagine it being done by someone like Simon & Garfunkel. It’s quite a timeless song. When we started off making Head Music, we didn’t want any real strings on it and I think it’s very much a Suede song but, like most of the songs on the album, it’s quite an advance on ‘Coming Up’. I think it’s a great little song. And that’s that.”

Neil’s a strange bastard. He’s living with me right now. And he never says a word. If you ask him how he’s doing, he’ll pick up a guitar and play a few chords as an answer.

Q: The Quietus are all massive fans of Suede and we think that it’s awesome that you’ve got Neil Codling in Penguin Cafe. How do you know him and how did he come to join?

A: He joined early on. I’d known him from doing other bits and bobs with various musicians in West London. Neil’s got exactly the right sensibility and he’s such a talented musician.

Quote with 1 note

Presenter: Which word do you wanna know in italian? We can translate it now
Brett: Pliers… because of our keyboard player Neil, his nickname is Pliers. It’s his nickname from childhood, that’s what they called him in school
Presenter: [to Neil] so your name is Pinze [italian for pliers, pronounced peen-zeh]? You can do a song about him ‘Our new Pinze’

Mat’s going to leave soon, and be replaced by three 14-year-old girls, so the rest of us can suck theirs blood and give us eternal youth

Quote with 8 notes

It’s quite strange. He’s like our fashion member! He’s a damn fine musician as well, he’s got a lot of vision, he’s like a whirlwind in the studio. But all those teeny magazines like Just Seventeen seem to love him, so we send him out to do those interviews, and smile sweetly and look handsome in the photos while we’re off doing something else.

I think he’s always been like that. But I didn’t know him as a teenager. Before he moved to London, the last time I saw him he was still in a nappy

Neil’s quite a star. But he isn’t carefully moulded to be in this band. He was like that from the moment we met him. He actually fits into what people perceive Suede as being much more than I do.
